Head of Secondary's Message
It has been another busy and exciting week at school, with some fantastic opportunities for our students and wider school community.
Ri Science Show A huge thank you to our Science team for organising the fantastic Ri Science Show. The event was packed with exciting and interactive demonstrations, bringing science to life in a fun and memorable way. It was wonderful to see so many students, families and staff attending and thoroughly enjoying the experience. It was a brilliant evening and a fantastic start to this year’s enrichment programme. We look forward to providing many more opportunities for students and families throughout the year.
KS4 Careers Fair – Please sign up via Arbor A reminder to parents and carers of our KS4 students to sign up for our upcoming KS4 Careers Fair via Arbor.
The Careers Fair is a valuable opportunity for students and their families to speak directly with a wide range of post-16 education and training providers, universities and representatives from different careers and employment sectors. Students will be able to explore the different pathways available to them, ask questions and begin making informed decisions about their next steps and future aspirations.

Due to Secondary Open Evening on Tuesday 22nd September, all secondary afterschool clubs will be cancelled.
Please note: Sports Fixtures will be running as usual

What is included in the evening:
A presentation from the Executive Principal and Head of Secondary, giving you key insights into our vision, values, and what you can expect from life at our school.
The opportunity to meet our teachers and staff across various departments, ask questions, and learn about our curriculum and support systems.
An opportunity to learn more about our school, meet our staff, and see what makes our community unique.
Important Information for Attendees:
Booking: Please ensure you book 1 ticket only, in the name of the Year 7 applicant/student via Eventbrite. This ticket covers the student and 2 parents or guardians.
Attendance Policy: To ensure we can accommodate all visitors safely and comfortably, we kindly request that only parents/guardians attends with the student. Extended family members will not be permitted to attend.
Parking: Limited parking is available on-site. Additional parking can be found at Tesco Hamilton, which is within walking distance of the school.
Arrival Time: Please arrive promptly at the time of your booked session, as late arrivals may miss key parts of the presentation or tour.

Department / Student Updates
National Biology Week Spelling Bee 2026
To promote literacy The Royal Society of Biology is running this competition which is open to all students. Literacy is a key factor in an individual’s success in science exams and during a pupil’s journey. With learning science they encounter a huge number and variety of new words. These words may not be commonly used outside of science classrooms and so pupils may get fewer opportunities to practise accurate spelling of science words.
Round 1 will be w/c 28.09.26 (in science lesson) where the teacher will read aloud 20 words, all pupils will write the spellings down and the highest scorers will enter round 2. Round 2 will be w/c 05.10.26 (location/time will be confirmed to pupils) the teacher will read the word, and pupils must verbally say the spelling and get through as many words as possible in a set time. The top scorers' names will be submitted to the National spelling bee competition panel, if the pupils qualify, they will then be entered to the National Finals.

Art Department Update
The Art Department are celebrating these sketchbook drawings (from actual birds) created by Luka P in 10K GCSE Art class.
The Royal Institution Science show
The Ri is the largest national provider of science shows for schools, with a wealth of experience in making science for kids engaging and fun. When their science presenters enter a packed school hall, they can sense the children’s excitement and anticipation. Not only is it a break from the normal school routine, it’s also a chance for children to enjoy an explosive introduction to the power of science. The Energy Live show delivered on Tuesday was jam-packed with experiments, explosions and hands-on participation by the children. We were fortunate to have two KS3 shows and a twilight community show, where it was wonderful to see the primary wing attend.

Y10 Football Match
Avanti Fields Year 10 boys produced an excellent team performance at yesterday’s football competition at Judgemeadow, finishing the tournament unbeaten and without conceding a single goal. The boys started strongly with a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Judgemeadow A, showing great discipline and determination to protect their lead. They followed this with an outstanding 5–0 win against Judgemeadow B, playing some excellent attacking football and creating chances throughout the game. Their final match was against a very strong St Paul’s side. Avanti defended superbly and battled for every ball, earning a well-deserved 0–0 draw to complete an impressive afternoon. Overall, the team played three matches, won two, drew one, scored six goals and conceded none. Every player contributed to a fantastic team effort, showing courage, determination and self-discipline while embodying the Avanti virtues throughout the competition. There were standout performances from Kush in midfield, whose relentless work rate and pressing helped create numerous attacking opportunities, and Kaashdeep in goal, who produced a string of brilliant saves to keep Avanti in the game against St Paul’s.
A fantastic performance from the whole team and a result the boys should be extremely proud of.

Vale la pena - It is worth it
Frida Kahlo was a Mexican painter and lived in the Blue House, which is now a museum. Despite being bedridden for long periods of her life, she produced many vivid self portraits, exploring themes of identity, pain and resilience. Her legacy continues to inspire artists – it is is worth discovering her work.
